I liked the sewing machine motor method because it would be somewhat easy to control and power.  After all, sewing machine motors are already AC so they can be plugged directly into the wall for power and are also designed to be variable speed via foot pedal.  I posted a wanted request for a working sewing machine to my local freecycle list (www.freecycle.org) and got what I was looking for.
