The String Line
For the string line I chose Berkley FireLine Braid Fishing Line (110 yard spool of 50lb test). I chose it basically after sitting in a sporting goods store just looking at fishing line and picking something out. This stuff is dark green braided line, making it strong and nearly invisible day or night. To hold the line together I used fishing swivels, (mine were made by Tsunami), both with and without the lock snap. Since I didn’t know what exactly I was going to use I picked up swivels in 65lb and 75lb test. The snap swivels enabled me to create a line that had three different sections extending between the wheels and that could be hooked on to the spokes while working on other sections. I could add a small section if I didn’t have enough line or remove a small section if I had too much. The swivels additionally allowed the string to spin off tension created by twisting around the wheels as the line goes around. They also in the end served as the means for preventing the ghosts from sliding on the line, but more on that later.
When tying the knots I used a “Palomar knot”, which is very quick, strong and simple. http://www.fish4fun.com/palomarknot.htm
The secret with the fishing line turned out to be that the line needed to be a LOT tauter than I thought it would, so much so that you’ll need to spin the line on with the last wheel in order to get it on at all.
In the end I had three roughly equal lengths of line connected together with snap swivels.
